Happy Fourth of July!
How did it get to be July already? We had a great first month of summer. Phoebe’s pre-kindergarten class at daycare goes on lots of field trips, and we had planned a few fun family weekends.

At the beginning of June, Grammie came to visit for a few days. We hung out with the kids, ate some good food, and got to attend one of Dave’s big band concerts at the Denver People’s Fair, which turned out to be a lot of fun.
The second weekend of June, Dave’s big band played a Sunday afternoon show in Estes Park, so we rented a cabin for the weekend. It was really fun to “camp” in luxury! The cabin was small, but very cute and clean, and we had a great time exploring Estes Park. Phoebe and I went out for a run and got caught in a hailstorm! It was a real treat for the kids to be allowed to walk out the front door by themselves, and there was even a little sandbox and swingset just a few steps from the cabin.
I guess it’s no surprise that our daughter is too busy reading to eat breakfast.

I know this is a long series of photos, but I just couldn’t leave any of them out.

The third weekend of June, our very good friend from church Rob married his wonderful fiancee Rachel. We went to the wedding as a family and had a great time dancing the night away!

Before church on Sunday, Phoebe looked out the window and said “there’s a balloon really close!” Sure enough, a hot-air balloon was landing in the field behind our house!
After church and a congregational meeting, I took the kids down to Palmer Lake, near Colorado Springs, to meet up with Elaina’s sister Laura, her husband Mike, and their two kids. Leah is 6, so she and Phoebe were soon old friends, and we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing day at Mike’s dad’s beautiful Spanish-style home.

Phoebe has been playing tee-ball for several weeks. Here she’s just starting to learn to bat.

I snuck up on Phoebe reading and took this video.

Dave had a band show down on Pearl Street Mall on the morning of the 4th of July, so the kids and I went down and played on the playground and in the fountain. We did hear a little bit of the show! That night, Benjamin loved the fireworks, shouting “light!” and pointing. I couldn’t believe the kids stayed up past 10:00!

We wanted to go on a hike as part of our long weekend, so we drove up to Nederland to hike near Moffat Tunnel, an old train tunnel. Afterward, we had a picnic lunch and rode the Carousel of Happiness.
